The company aimed to transform its service portfolio to meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions. The primary focus was on reducing emissions during the use-phase of compressors – a phase responsible for around 99% of their total CO₂ footprint. The aim of the project was to leverage an outside-in analysis to identify services that enhance market competitiveness and position the company for long-term growth.

Our team began with comprehensive desk research, examining key sustainability regulations and analysing competitor sustainability services to identify market trends and benchmarks.
We also carried out structured interviews with Burckhardt Compression’s customers to understand their pain points and sustainability needs, particularly in relation to compressor operations. In cross-functional ideation workshops, sustainable and impactful solutions were developed. The resulting ideas were classified and prioritised based on customer and business values, as well as feasibility.
Our collaborative approach resulted in a shortlist of sustainability service ideas with high potential for business impact. A roadmap was created, outlining actionable next steps for implementing and testing the most promising ideas with Burckhardt Compression’s customers.
Key interview insights were collected and mapped to the main service ideas, serving as a basis for internal strategy development, management buy-in for the transformation, and future customer discussions.
Together, Burckhardt Compression and Zühlke are strengthening competitiveness through customer-centric and sustainability-driven innovation.
