1. Data trust: can we prove the data is permitted, fit, and protected?
Data trust means the organisation can answer straightforward but essential questions:
- What data is being used, and for what purpose?
- Where did it come from?
- Is it accurate and representative enough for the use case?
- Who can access it, and under what controls?
This is not about perfect data. It is about whether the data is defensible for the decision or workflow the AI supports.
When data trust is weak, leaders inherit risks that better models cannot fix: privacy exposure, bias, audit failure, unclear permission boundaries, and security teams defaulting to “no”.
A strong governance approach treats permission, provenance, classification, and quality as entry conditions for scale - not documentation exercises to tidy up later.
