To expand its portfolio with innovative, higher-value products, Schurter set out to develop an attractive, flexible, and intuitive control unit. Building on the component manufacturer’s initial concept, Zühlke transformed the idea into a fully market-ready product.

Schurter offers a wide range of electronic components and operates in a market characterised by increasing price pressure. To counter shrinking margins, the company aimed to expand its portfolio with new and innovative products that could be produced efficiently and adapted to different use cases.
This idea was to create a versatile control unit suitable for prototypes as well as small to medium-sized batches of electronic consumer devices. To realise this ambition, Schurter got Zühlke on board for the need of additional expertise in software development, intelligent electronics, and agile product development.
For the cooperation with Schurter, Zühlke assembled a cross-disciplinary team of experts that defined the operating concept, developed the housing, electronics, firmware, and software.
An agile approach with short development cycles and continuous functional testing ensured transparency, flexibility, and full control over evolving requirements throughout the project.
Based on Schurter’s original concept, Zühlke drafted and designed the CDS1 display switch. A stylish, functional control unit that can be easily programmed using the corresponding software.
Schurter now manufactures the CDS1 in-house, assuring full control over production costs and revenue streams while offering customers a flexible, programmable solution for a wide range of applications.
