To digitise its servicing operations and connect its lights to the cloud, RP-Technik partnered with Zühlke to integrate IoT capabilities quickly and efficiently. The result was a scalable, cloud-based solution that modernised maintenance processes and laid the foundation for a future-proof business model.

Reliably indicating and lighting escape routes is crucial for safety and a legal requirement in large buildings. These emergency lighting systems must be inspected regularly, including functional testing of every individual light.
Until now, servicing involved locating each light, performing manual tests, and documenting results on site. This process was time-consuming, labour-intensive, and costly for both building managers and on-site service teams. RP-Technik needed a simpler, more efficient approach that would reduce operational effort while maintaining full compliance.
Zühlke developed a cloud-connected IoT solution based on the Microsoft Azure platform. These next-generation lights could now perform self-tests automatically, with their status and function test results recorded in a fully auditable digital process — without any physical interaction.
Service staff remotely trigger the connected devices to perform the self-tests and download the test results wirelessly via a mobile app. These test reports are automatically uploaded to the cloud, eliminating the need for ladders, manual checks or paper-based documentation.

A lightweight IoT pilot project demonstrated clear value for all stakeholders. Service staff saved valuable working time and were able to focus on higher-value technical work. At the same time, building managers and end customers benefited from lower servicing costs and improved transparency. Ultimately, enhanced after-sales service strengthened customer loyalty and opened further growth opportunities for RP-Technik.
