‘Energising a sustainable industrial sector’ – the motto of this year's Hannover Messe allows plenty of room for interpretation. It was evident that a wide range of topics could fall into this theme. In the end, the fair focused not only on driving the energy supply for a sustainable industrial sector but also emphasised the importance of delivering momentum for lasting change within the entire sector. But what role do AI and new ecosystems play in this change? We visited the fair and have compiled our fresh impressions, combined with experiences from our projects, below.

Sustainability in manufacturing: from vision to business opportunity

This year's Hannover Messe shows clear progress in terms of sustainability. Looking back at Hannover Messe 2023, sustainability was more of a vision. This year, the topic has become significantly more tangible and it is clear that the industrial sector is setting concrete goals and showing solutions for successful sustainability transformation. Hydrogen played a central role as a potential cornerstone for a sustainable, emission-free economy. Other use cases, including emission reduction in production, reducing dependency on fossil fuels through electrification and renewable energy sources, and the introduction of a circular economy clearly show that sustainability is evolving from merely a reputation enhancer to an innovation driver. Sustainability is more than sustainable products. It is the opportunity to operate sustainably, conserving resources and being profitable.

However, amid all the enthusiasm, we can also see that the transformation to a sustainable industrial sector remains a massive challenge, especially when it comes to creating profitable solutions. Support is needed here and the issue needs to be viewed holistically. Our suggestion is to start with low-hanging fruit and small first steps because if companies take on too much – radical initiatives can fail.

Artificial intelligence: core of industrial innovation and transformation

One of the core messages of the fair was definitely that artificial intelligence, which was already pervasive before the fair, is the enabler technology for sustainable business practices and the future viability of the industrial sector. Our participation in the special event ‘AI in Industry’ prior to the HMI highlighted the central role of AI and machine learning in today's industrial landscape. Instead of just simmering on the back burner, businesses need to put a spotlight on this technology. According to analysts from IoT-Analytics in Hamburg, AI is now among the top 5 topics for decision-makers. This reflects a broader industrial trend where the vision of Industry 4.0 and Manufacturing X is realised through data-driven advantages for manufacturers and consumers, with simplifications in the area of AI being welcomed rather than viewed with scepticism.

Digitised energy networks, machines with intelligent fault detection, predictive maintenance systems, generative AI-based programming processes, and chatbots for optimising services and offerings are just some examples that show how much potential AI holds for the industrial sector. AI-based innovation makes it possible to streamline operations, counter the skills shortage, reduce the likelihood of errors in manufacturing, cut emissions, and boost competitiveness. In our discussions with fair participants, clients, and partners, it was also clear that simply envisioning innovation through new technologies is not enough. Innovation must be actively anchored in the industrial sector to remain future-proof.
