Contributing to more sustainable aviation

Lantal has set itself the goal of saving resources and emissions with a new carpet production process for aviation. We carried out a life cycle assessment, with a suprising key learning: It's all about weight.

Zühlke's life cycle assessment for a new carpet production process proves a massive reduction of water usage and carbon emissions from cradle to grave: A 35% lighter carpet results in 35% less CO2 emissions across the carpet's life cycle.

Lantal & Zühlke: Contributing to more sustainable aviation

Life cycle assessment for a new carpet production process for aviation

  • Lantal has set itself the goal of saving resources and emissions with a new carpet production process for aviation and has therefore realised a completely new digital deep dyed process.
  • The company wanted to understand the main drivers and differences of the ecological footprint between the traditional and the new process in order to learn how to improve it further.
  • Zühlke was brought in to carry out a life cycle assessment, looking at the entire product life cycle of a carpet from cradle to grave

LCA: massive reduction of resource usage & emissions

  • Zühlke determined the ecological footprint of Lantals carpet manufacturing and coloring process, for the traditional process as well as for the new digital deep dyed process.
  • The Zühlke team brought in their knowledge and experience in proceeding a life cycle assessment according to industry standards as wells as standards from the European Union.
  • The team compared the processes and proved that the new process results in a massive reduction of water usage and carbon emissions across the life cycle due to a significant weight reduction.

It´s all about weight: Lantal reduces its own emissions by 70%

  • The key learning from the life cycle assessment is, that the weight has by far the biggest impact on the ecological footprint of the carpet.
  • The analysis also shows that Lantal has already been able to significantly improve the production process, which is in its own hands, such that emissions have been reduced by 70 per cent.
  • Lantal benefits from an external analysis that brings credibility to the entire calculation and can be used as a selling proposition in client pitches.
