Case Study

Lufthansa Cargo System Modernisation

Scope

As part of its strategic ‘Cargo 2020’ program, Lufthansa Cargo is carrying out a comprehensive modernization project with Zühlke to replace its legacy mainframe hosted cargo system.

Challenges

  • A high-performance and highly stable legacy mainframe system has successfully processed all the core processes for Lufthansa’s cargo business. However, it does not easily support new, future requirements, such as more flexible business processes, new distribution channels and improved user experience.
  • Recruitment of developers with the required skills for the legacy system is becoming more and more difficult.

Zuhlke's Approach

  • Reduction of implementation costs and management of project risks.
  • Optimisation of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through tailored enterprise services.
  • Requirements, project management and quality assurance for large-scale IT projects.

Value Delivered and Conclusion

After careful consideration of all options, Lufthansa Cargo decided on a solution based on adapted off-the-shelf software. Zühlke, together with Lufthansa Cargo, successfully defined and managed the integration of the new software into the existing, highly networked system landscape.
