Bespoke requirements engineering techniques

To enable it to take one of its IT projects forward, a major Swiss company in the electricity sector found itself in need of requirements specification expertise. Zühlke specified the procedure and methods and supported the company through to completion of the specification.

Task

A client operating in the Swiss electricity sector transacted its business using a number of different IT systems. As part of a project to implement a complex planning system, the client required assistance with business requirements specification and in drawing up the specification document for a WTO GPA-compliant tender.

Solution

Zühlke placed its expertise and many years of requirements engineering experience at the client’s disposal. It proposed the following package of measures:

  • Analysis: situation analysis was carried out by means of a penetrating evaluation of existing documentation and requirements continued within it, complemented by workshops and interviews with stakeholders. The analysis identified gaps and flagged up specific areas for improvement.
  • Synthesis: development of a bespoke requirements methodology, suitable for the complex, dynamic client environment and able to produce high quality requirements.

Impressed by the interim results, the client implemented the requirements methodology proposed by Zühlke.

  • Implementation: introduction of the new methodology by Zühlke. Training and coaching, in particular in use case methods, activity diagram techniques, writing text requirements, attribution and correlation of requirements. Quality assurance via two review cycles and systematic cross-comparison.

  • The client achieved its objective of having a methodologically sound, consistent, functional requirements specification, confirmed by a final assessment.
