Functional analysis for improved safety

For its new locomotive platform, Bombardier Transportation’s locomotives business unit needed to establish procedures for producing licensing documentation for its various target markets.

Task

The growing complexity of modern locomotives and ever more demanding country-specific licensing requirements mean that the amount of documentation required for licensing is increasing. The licensing process looks at the functional safety of vehicles and trains as separate systems.

Solution/Implementation

In driving forward development of its TRAXX locomotive platform, Bombardier Transportation utilised a new methodology consisting of a combination of written requirements, SysML models and fault tree analysis. The aim was to create a consistent set of base data, which would both serve as a basis for development and allow documentation required for licensing to be generated automatically.

The core team, composed of technical specialists from Bombardier and Zühlke experts, was trained in the use of a previously developed SysML-based functional analysis technique. To iron out any issues with the technique, the team then applied it to safety-relevant functions. The practical knowledge gained facilitated further development and refinement of the methodology and also enabled improvements to be made to the documentation for the methodology. The client’s engineers were then personally coached in the new way of working.

Zühlke also integrated the tools used into Bombardier’s systems and implemented automated generation of licensing documentation.

Customer benefits

  • Bombardier was able to introduce a tool-supported end-to-end methodology for formulating and generating a significant part of its licensing documentation.

  • Zühlke supported the Bombardier team in applying the functional safety techniques and tools in practice, to the point where they were able to model new functions independently and were able to adapt the methods and tools to meet new requirements.
