Web services promise an open and smooth data exchange between companies. Though web services do not yet offer the full functionality, they are increasingly used for the integration of systems as an alternative to proprietary middleware solutions. New standards, for example in the area of security and reliability, alleviate these deficiencies, however, they also increase complexity.
